On April 10th, the Reston Zoo's ring-tailed lemur family welcomed a new baby. The baby joins mother Anna, father Zabu, and big sister Angelina in the zoo's lemur exhibit. This adorable youngster is usually found clinging to mom, but as he grows, he is becoming more independent and ventures further away from mom's protection.
On May 10th, Persephone, the Reston Zoo's female mountain coati, gave birth to two adorable kits, a male and a female. Coatis, members of the raccoon family, are long-nosed, ringed-tailed creatures from the forests of South America. Persephone is a very protective mother, keeping her young ones closely under her eye, but be sure to visit soon as these playful, curious babies begin to explore their home.

New prairie dog pups have emerged for the first time! Born approximately 4 weeks ago, they have been seen wrestling and galloping in and out of their burrows regularly. All six babies will stay fairly close to their mother for several more weeks. To see the pups and all their playful antics, the best time to for viewing is mid morning.
Rounding out the zoo's baby boom, several new babies, or joeys, can be seen at the red kangaroo exhibit. The size of a jellybean at birth, kangaroo joeys spend the first several months of their lives in the pouch of their mother. The new arrivals in our kangaroo exhibit are already starting to creep out of their pouches for a quick visit with zoo guests.

"This zoo is a good way for kids to get up close and personal to animals they've never seen before, let alone touch and feed," said animal curator Ashley Rood of Herndon. "It's as close as you can get to being out in the wild while still in the city."
